The glorious 12th

No, not that one. The date today, being 12/12/12, marks the last properly matching date in our lifetime.  Which is sad, if you're sad like me and have a mild obsession with dates and numbers.

We've been spoilt, with all the lovely dates starting on 01/01/01, running through 02/02/02, 03/03/03, passing my mother's brilliant birthday on 07/07/07, and onwards up till today.

Not to mention the other great dates such as my brother's wedding date of 10/11/12, a pattern which reaches its final, for our generation anyway, incarnation on 11/12/13, a year from yesterday.

My own much anticipated special birthday date was 11.1.11, which has passed, but such palindromic dates are what we have to make do with. My sons have the next one on 3.1.13, although if you want to be pedantic it is better on 31.1.13. My daughter has to wait for her special birthday date until 2.9.29, and that's not even palindromic.

Maybe she'll be excited on her birthday in 2092, but then all will be looking onward to the 22nd century and the imminent 01/01/01 etc.

February is here

Hmm. It seems to be the 5th of February. Oops.

Which does mean that I forgot the birthday yesterday of someone who used to be very important. Which is a bit sad. Not that it was their birthday, but that it doesn't matter that I forgot, because they couldn't care less.

I've got another to-be-forgotten birthday next week but I have more self respect than to spend another moment thinking about that one.

The date also means I haven't blogged for a while.

What have I been doing?
Playing with my 3DS mostly.

I have Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, which is a turn by turn strategy game. I like it a lot. I'm spectacularly bad at first person shooters, so lining my men up and telling them to shoot is far better. This game also shows the 3D effect off splendidly.

Mario 3D is defeating me. There is no invincibility cheat in the Special World, so the tricky levels are tricky. Although to be fair, the tricky levels normally involve Luigi falling off things rather than being stung by an enemy. I am Luigi still, who doesn't seem to have a purpose. Nobody to defeat, nobody to rescue. He is fun, especially when he wins a level and way heys in the most camp manner imaginable.

But behold the greatest game ever. Mariokart 7. Now mine.
Everything you'd expect from a Mariokart title. Except no challenges like the previous DS title had. Boo. 4 new cups and 4 retro ones. New features include customisable karts, a parachute to float down from heights, a flower item to shoot flames at opponents, all seven items as one item pick up and probably other things I have either not found yet or have forgotten.

In other news, I've been on my annual jolly to Glasgow, which was, as usual, ace and should be more often than annually.

I have had my hair cut properly short. Possibly an error, I lack the prettiness of face required to carry off the Face On Display thing.

Blogging excuse: not been very well with infected finger and a cold. Poor old me.

Birthweek

I've upgraded. One day seems hardly sufficient to contemplate the vast number of years I've been alive, so this year I'm having a week.

Yes, I am too old to care. Pfffffth to that.

Normally I strop and humph my way through the days surrounding my birthday in a fug of "nobody cares, boo, the last year has been a disaster" etc.

Not this year.

Last year I had a chronic neck injury and was abstinent from alcohol, and fun. So I did nothing for my birthday aside from a lunch, and felt very middle aged and rubbish.

This year I am celebrating nicely, with alcohol and good friends (as well as people I'm trying to be friends with who sadly seem to be resisting but I live in hope). While simply being another year older isn't all that, I do feel I need to celebrate my little girl arriving, my neck being cured, and my successful bid for an unsuitable gift.

Who's shallow and materialistic?

I did also have a relatively good shot at nearly dying so I do feel quite jubilant about still being alive.

Me me me me me me me me me me.

Wednesday is the actual anniversary of my birth. Just so you know. I'll be 852.

Birthday

3rd January 2006. Two perfect little boys are born, making their mother the happiest mother ever.

3rd January 2010. Two perfect little boys, still in the afterglow of Christmas, celebrate their fourth birthday. Two perfect little boys get more presents and are overwhelmed by about 10am.

It's a shame. It's all Christmas rolled into one long stretch of excitement. They don't care particularly what day it is: no Santa?? Bah. If I could give my babies one thing*, it would be a summer birthday.

They would probably request Haribo. They're 4.

*they are already healthy, and brilliantly clever and gifted, and loved.

Three today

My babies are three. That makes me sort of middle aged or something, it's weird. They're not babies, they're quite grown up really. Three years!

The living room: 8.30 am:

My youngest child and his favourite present:

Exciting new scooters from godmothers:

And skates from a favourite aunt

I have an issue or twenty with drinking. As such, I didn't buy wine for a party I wasn't having for three year olds. So when the inevitable party started, someone inevitably wanted wine. I had one bottle of wine: a bottle of rosé received for Christmas. Not cold. And due to deciding that I neither had the dishes nor the willingness to wash up, I was using disposable cups and plates.

Ahem. That's a good quality rosé you know...

...classy chick that I am.

And a spectacular cake, with spectacular sparklers, ruined by a daft cow taking photos and blocking everyone else's view:

Much gratitude to people for caring enough to visit and for being generous enough to buy lovely gifts.
